Video Tips

Recently on Fridays, I’ve gone “live” on Twitter/Periscope to broadcast a short tip. The tips cover social media, marketing and more. I’m using this post to collect all of the tips in one place.

Whenever I record a new tip, I’ll add it to this post. So come on back! And look for me (live) on Fridays 👋

A Tip on: Flipboard

In this tip, I talk about Flipboard: what it is, how it works and how I make use of it. Flipboard is one of my favorite tools for finding and curating content.

A Tip on: Building a Culture of Content in Your Organization

During my time at DNN Software, I helped build a culture of content. What does that mean? That everyone was encouraged to contribute to the “content team,” from engineers to product managers, from Finance to HR:

A Tip on: How to Improve Your Twitter Bio

I share a combination of subjective tips (i.e. what I’d like to see in people’s bios) and objective tips (i.e. overall best practices that cannot be debated ;-)

A Tip on: How to Be More Engaging on Twitter

In the past, I used Twitter exclusively to share links to content. These days, I still share links, but try to focus more on engaging with people.

A Tip on: Twitter Cards

TL;DR Images May Detract. Sometimes, it’s best NOT to attach an image to a tweet and let Twitter cards do their magic.

A Tip on: Creating a Twitter Poll

Two-part tip here: Part 1 covers how to create a Twitter Poll. Pretty rudimentary stuff, as Twitter makes it really easy. You may consider Part 2 more useful, as I discuss how to get people to see and vote on your poll.

Part 1:

Part 2:

A Tip on: Starting a Blog

Ready to start a blog? Before selecting a blogging platform, define your objectives and your point of view:

A Tip on: Doing Weekly Live Video Broadcasts

A bit meta here: a live video talking about how to do weekly live video broadcasts:

A Tip on: Finding the Time to Do Something Important

I hear people say, “I don’t have time for X” and “I don’t have time for Y.” Well, you do have time for X and Y if you plan your daily routine intentionally. That’s what I talk about here:

A Tip on: Useful Mobile Apps

I discuss some of my favorite apps and why they may be useful to you: MLB.TV, Dropbox, Slack, Moment and Quik:

A Tip on: Composing Tweets that Contain a Link

TL;DR Avoid the default behavior, which is to click the Tweet button, then publish the tweet as-is. Customize, customize! I explain further:

A Tip on: Sharing a Link via Facebook

With recent changes to Facebook’s algorithm, it’s harder than ever to share a link (and have it be seen) on Facebook. Here’s a Flipboard magazine with related stories. And here’s my tip (aka hack):

A Tip on: Finding Content on Twitter via Nuzzel

Nuzzel is a great tool for surfacing interesting content from the people you’re following on Twitter.

A Tip on: How I Follow Back on Twitter

When people are nice enough to follow me on Twitter, here’s how I decide whether to follow back:

A Tip on: What To Do on Friday’s

You can look at Friday as the end of a week. You could also look at it as the early start to the next week. That and more in this tip.

A Tip on: Doing Live Video on Twitter

Meta, meta on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all? Meta, meta! Doing a live video about how to do a live video. My Friday Tips are done via the Periscope app on my iPhone. I have so much fun doing them and it’s so easy. Have a look:

A Tip on: Quantifying Your Smartphone Usage

Think you might be addicted to your smartphone? Then use an app to quantify that addiction. Using your phone 4 hours a day is one thing, but if it’s 12+ hours, then that could be an issue. This tip highlights the “Moment” app that I’m using on my iPhone:
